Dear Food Spirit, Jewels,
The food and service you provided at my recent cocktail party was phenomenal! As this was my first attempt at utilizing outside help for one of my private parties, the experience was amazing with regard to how it enabled me to look at entertaining from a new perspective. The realization of what I was getting seemed to come in three tiers.
The first was the standard understanding that by using a caterer, I was going to have more time to spend with my guests. Endless books on entertaining have been written about this topic and how this should be the goal of any good host, but this time I learned first hand the difference between hosting and participating.
In addition to providing enjoyment for others, I was able to enjoy the event myself in a more relaxed way. This was also evident in how my guests socialized with me; they never felt as though they were keeping me from something, because I didn’t have that typical nervous, oven-watching, buffet lookout, expression on my face.
The second tier came in the form of how I viewed the financing of the party. Using a caterer for the first time can come with some initial sticker shock, but in reality you are just looking at the cost as a one lump sum. I felt that your price was reasonable right from the start, but the more comparisons I made to doing things myself, the more things began to balance out.
One of the big things was your expertise in portions. Not having this knowledge, I typically overbuy and end up having enough leftovers to supply a second event; hence, I have overspent. Secondly, I find that when I make things myself, I can spend a lot on ingredients for just one dish, because a recipe may call for just a pinch of an expensive spice, but I have to purchase the whole bottle. When this scenario repeats itself for multiple items being served, the bulk purchases to cover the pinches, dashes, and other small measurements start to add up.
The third tier was realized by my state of mind in the final day and hours before my party. With all the food shopping and preparation no longer a concern, I was able to focus more on other small details that I previously ran out of time for or frantically got done as the guests were coming in the door. Rather than questioning myself as to why I had this party in the first place, I was thinking wow; there are all these things I don’t have to worry about!
The leisure I experienced in the last hours rather than panic left me relaxed, excited, and “waiting” for the party to begin. I attribute this wonderful experience in entertaining to you Jewels and I look forward to planning another event with you soon.
Thank you,
